Do phim được chuyển thể từ 2 tác phẩm trong loạt truyện về Sao Hỏa, nên không đủ thời gian làm rơ mọi thứ. Để giúp các bác dễ hiểu hơn, xin giải thích một số điều:
- Về các đại dương trên Sao Hỏa: Truyền thuyết và các giả thuyết của các nhà khoa học cho rằng, trước kia, trên Sao Hỏa cũng tồn tại các Đại dương như Trái Đất. Tuy nhiên do va chạm với các thiên thạch, bề mặt của Sao Hỏa bị nứt ra, nước ở các Đại dương ngấm hết vào lơi Sao Hỏa theo các vết nứt.
Do dó ở thời điểm film John Carter, trên Sao Hỏa không c̣n các Đại dương, chỉ c̣n một số con sông, trong đó có Sông Iss thiêng liêng.
- Về các chủng tộc trên Sao Hỏa: Gồm có các chủng tộc chính là Người (có da đỏ, máu xanh) như dân của 2 thành Helium và Zoganda; Các chủng tộc người kỳ quái da xanh (như tộc Tharks - những người ôn ḥa, cam chịu hơn, tộc Warhoon-những kẻ hiếu chiến).
- Về tộc Thark: Tộc này sống theo bầy đàn, như thời nguyên thủy ở Trái Đất. Tục lệ của Tộc đề ra là: cấm được yêu và có trứng riêng với nhau.
Tộc Thark sinh ra trứng, và được ấp tại ḷ ấp trứng chung cho toàn tộc, trong ṿng 5 năm. V́ thế không ai biết được Thark con nào là do trứng của ḿnh sinh ra. Tuy nhiên Tộc trưởng Tark đă yêu mẹ của Solo, 2 người có 1 quả trứng riêng, và lén mang đi ấp ở một nơi riêng biệt. Chính v́ thế, Tars mới biết Sola là con gái của ḿnh, và điều này được John Carter cảm nhận được.
- Các loài thú trên Sao Hỏa: có một số loài chính như sau:
+ Chó Sao Hỏa (calot): to, xấu như ma, nhưng cực kỳ nhanh. Con chó Woola là 1 điển h́nh.
+ Sư tử Sao Hỏa (Banth): con này 10 chân, có dáng tương tự sư tử ở Trái Đất, nh́n trông nửa sư tử, nửa chó sói, mơm như cá sấu...
+ Trâu chiến Sao Hỏa (Thoat): Tạm gọi thế, v́ trông giống trâu, tê giác... Có 8 chân không móng, màu vàng đất hơi giống bánh rán, 2 sừng có chức năng pḥng ngự. Đây là loại thú cưỡi chính trên Sao Hỏa của các bộ tộc như Thark, Warhoon,...
+ Khỉ đột trắng (White Ape): To lớn, lông trắng xóa, là loài thú hung dữ, tàn bạo nhất trên Sao Hỏa.
Chỉ có các Tộc trưởng, Quốc vương của các thành mới được mặc áo choàng có lông khỉ đột trắng.
(Như Tars, Vua Helium, Sab Than mặc).
