Zatoichi - một người mù, hành nghề đấm bóp và mê cờ bạc đồng thời cũng là một kiếm sĩ xuất sắc, tuyệt vời. Zatoichi là một anh hùng hay giúp những người dân lương thiện và yếu đuối trong một thế giới điên rồ. Ngày nọ Zatoichi lang thang đến một tỉnh lỵ nhỏ và nhận thấy có gì không ổn như vẻ bề ngoài bình yên của nó. Băng đảng Ginzo tung hoành làm đầu rơi máu chảy cho nhiều thương nhân và đã thuê một kiếm sĩ tài giỏi tên Hattori để tiêu diệt các băng đảng đối thủ khác. Ở đó, Zatoichi làm bạn với một người mê cờ bạc nhưng lúc nào cũng bị thua cháy túi tên Shinkichi, và cùng hợp sức với hai cô geisha đang tìm kiếm Ginzo để trả thù vì tên này đã giết hại gia đình và cha mẹ của hai nàng...
