Bộ phim On the road (Tạm dịch: Trên đường) được chuyển thể từ tiểu thuyết nổi tiếng cùng tên của nhà văn Jack Kerouac, do đạo diễn Walter Salles thực hiện. Đây cũng là bộ phim hợp tác của nhiều nền điện ảnh như Brazil, Pháp, Anh, Mỹ.
Sau Thế chiến II, một thế hệ nhà văn trẻ với cách suy nghĩ, tư tưởng hoàn toàn mới dần h́nh thành tại Mỹ. Họ làm việc không theo một nguyên tắc nào, sáng tạo gần như tự phát thông qua trải nghiệm tức thời. Chính sự hẫng hụt về tư tưởng sau chiến tranh đă tạo cho họ một lối sống lập dị, phản kháng lại chuẩn mực đạo đức xă hội. Tất cả những con người đó được gọi là thế hệ Beat. Một trong những tác phẩm văn học nổi tiếng nhất thuộc thế hệ Beat chính là On the Road của Jack Kerouac. Hoàn thành vào tháng 4 năm 1951 nhưng phải măi đến năm 1957, On the Road mới chính thức được xuất bản. Cuốn sách đă được tạp chí Time bầu chọn vào danh sách 100 tiểu thuyết tiếng Anh xuất sắc nhất trong giai đoạn từ 1923 đến 2005, được nhà xuất bản Modern Library chọn vào danh sách 100 tiểu thuyết tiếng Anh hay nhất trong thế kỷ 20.
On the Road cũng gây ấn tượng cho khán giả nhờ phần h́nh ảnh đẹp đến kinh ngạc cùng diễn xuất tuyệt vời của dàn diễn viên trẻ. Mặc dù Sam Riley đảm nhận vai chính Sal Paradise nhưng Garrett Hedlund mới là “ông chủ” thực sự của bộ phim. Vai Dean Moriarty khiến người xem vừa yêu vừa ghét, yêu vô điều kiện, ghét đến không phai. Trong khi đó, Marylou là vai diễn hoàn toàn lột xác (về mặt h́nh tượng) của nữ diễn viên Kristen Stewart (nàng Bella trong Chạng Vạng hay Snow White trong Snow White and the Huntsman). C̣n Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, như mọi khi, vẫn làm hài ḷng tuyết đối khán giả.
On the road đă được công chiếu tại Liên hoan phim Cannes 2012. Tuy chưa đạt đến tầm xuất sắc nhưng On the Road vẫn là tác phẩm đáng xem.
