Nếu dùng một cụm từ để đánh giá ngắn gọn về trilogy The Hobbit th́ phù hợp nhất hẳn là "Không được như kỳ vọng". Có lẽ điều đó đúng đối với đại bộ phận khán giả, cả những fan trung thành của thế giới Trung Địa, lẫn những người xem phổ thông như ḿnh.
Chương kết của bộ ba The Hobbit không thoát khỏi yếu điểm của hai phần trước, dài ḍng ở những phần không cần thiết, trong khi cắt xén và sửa đổi không thương tiếc một số chi tiết quan trọng. Ta có thể bắt gặp những phân cảnh đậm chất bi tráng, mang dáng dấp của LOTR thuở nào, để rồi sau đó lại phải lắc đầu ngán ngẩm trước cách xử lư của đạo diễn và biên kịch ở một phân cảnh khác. Một bộ phim vừa dài hơi, lại vừa tạo cảm giác không trọn vẹn, cũng dễ hiểu khi người xem cảm thấy hụt hẫng. Nếu như Peter Jackson có được tâm huyết của thời LOTR, hay The Hobbit chỉ có 2 thay v́ 3 phần phim,... th́ rất có thể chúng ta đă được thưởng thức một tác phẩm hay hơn nhiều.
Nói như vậy không có nghĩa The Hobbit là một trilogy dở. Chỉ có điều khi đặt cạnh LOTR, trước cái bóng quá lớn, nó quả thật nhỏ bé.
Dù ǵ đi nữa, đây vẫn là một tác phẩm Adventure, Fantasy hiếm hoi trong xu hướng điện ảnh ngày nay. Và một điểm hay ḿnh vẫn luôn thích ở The Hobbit hay LOTR là những lời thoại mang đậm chất văn học, giả tưởng mà phim truyền tải. Việc chuyển ngữ cho chúng có phần vất vả, nhưng cũng không kém phần thú vị. Đó mới là lư do chính để ḿnh nhận dịch bộ phim này.
