Lấy bối cảnh miền tây nước Mỹ thuở sơ khai với nhiều hiểm nguy ŕnh rập, phim kể câu chuyện về chàng trai chăn cừu Albert (Seth MacFarlane) khù khờ nhát gan, luôn t́m cách né tránh những rắc rối phiền phức, để đến mức chính cô bạn gái Louise xinh đẹp (Amanda Seyfried) đă rời bỏ anh và ngă vào ṿng tay của Foy (Neil Patrick Harris), gă doanh nhân thành đạt nhất thị trấn. Một ngày, cô gái xinh đẹp và bí ẩn Anna (Charlize Theron) xuất hiện và làm đảo lộn mọi thứ trong cuộc đời của Albert, giúp anh trở thành chàng trai can đảm hơn…
Tuy nhiên, Albert không biết rằng Anna chính là vợ của Clinch Leatherwood (Liam Neeson) - tay súng nguy hiểm khét tiếng trong vùng.
