Nhiệm Vụ Bất Khả Thi 1-Một điệp viên bị khai trừ do hiểu lầm đă cùng đồng nghiệp truy t́m tung tích kẻ phản bội và bản danh sách bị đánh cắp. Bộ phim gắn liền với tên tuổi của Tom Cruise - tài tử hàng đầu Hollywood và là thành công lớn nhất từ trước tới nay của hăng Paramount.
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) là thành viên của một nhóm điệp viên thuộc IMF - lực lượng chuyên thực thi những nhiệm vụ bất khả thi. Dưới sự phân công của Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), nhóm này tới Prague nhằm ngăn chặn vụ đánh cắp một chiếc đĩa có bản danh sách tên những điệp viên hàng đầu thế giới và cả thông tin về cuộc đời thực của họ. Công việc vẫn tiến triển theo kế hoạch b́nh thường cho đến khi cả nhóm bị rơi vào ổ phục kích và chỉ c̣n Ethan sống sót.
Sau đó Ethan tới gặp chỉ huy thượng cấp Kittridge (Henry Czerny), ông cho anh biết trong hàng ngũ IMF có một kẻ phản bội và chính kẻ này đă đem bí mật bán trên chợ đen. Nhưng người ta lại nghi ngờ Ethan v́ anh là người duy nhất thoát khỏi cuộc tấn công nọ và khai trừ tư cách làm điệp viên của Ethan. Anh buộc phải trốn thoát, t́m một thành viên khác của đội cũng sống sót như anh, đó là Claire (Emmanuelle Beart). Để chứng minh sự trong sạch của ḿnh, Ethan và Claire cộng tác với những điệp viên bị khai trừ khác nhằm truy ra tung tích kẻ phản bội và t́m kiếm chiếc đĩa đă bị đánh cắp.
Đây là một bộ phim hành động có nội dung phức tạp và đ̣i khỏi khán giả phải tư duy khi thưởng thức. Nhưng mặc dù chứa đựng quá nhiều t́nh tiết rối rắm, đạo diễn Brian De Palma vốn nổi tiếng với thể loại hành động ly kỳ đă làm người xem không phàn nàn một chút nào về chất lượng âm thanh và h́nh ảnh.
Quang cảnh sảnh đường căn cứ CIA ở Langley thực ra được quay tại Ṭa thị chính của London. Băi đáp cho máy bay trực thăng ngay bên Tower Bridge nơi Kitteridge đỗ xuống không hề tồn tại, người ta phải dựng tạm ở trong công viên để phục vụ cho cảnh quay và dỡ đi ngay sau khi xong. C̣n khi quay cảnh Tom Cruise chui trên trần nhà xuống và lơ lửng cách mặt đất một khoảng nhỏ, đầu của anh cứ bị chúc xuống sàn và để giải quyết chuyện này, anh có một sáng kiến thông minh: bỏ ít tiền xu vào giày cho cân bằng.
