Need For Speed kể về một cuộc đua vô tiền khoáng hậu xuyên nước Mỹ - bắt đầu là một nhiệm vụ mang tính trả thù rửa hận nhưng rồi rốt cuộc lại là sự cứu chuộc. Trong nỗ lực cuối cùng để cứu lấy garage độ xe đang lâm nguy của mình, thợ máy kỹ sư Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) - cùng ekip chuyên thiết kế và độ xe đua công suất cao - bất đắc dĩ phải hợp tác với tên cựu tay đua giải NASCAR giàu có kiêu căng Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). Nhưng rồi một vụ mua bán xe lớn với Julia Bonet (Poots) -một nữ quái chuyên môi giới xe đua, tưởng chừng sẽ cứu vãn được hoạt động làm ăn cuối cùng lại trở thành thảm họa khi Dino gài bẫy Tobey tội giết người sau một cuộc đua phi pháp.

Hai năm sau, ra khỏi tù, Tobey lên kế hoạch trả thù bằng cách hạ gục Dino trong cuộc đua De Leon - nổi tiếng như giải Super Bowl của dân đua xe lậu. Và để về đích đúng giờ, Tobey buộc phải ngồi sau tay lái của một cuộc thách đấu tốc độ cao với các màn hành động nghẹt thở, vừa phải chạy thoát cảnh sát truy đuổi vừa phải đối phó với những chướng ngại nguy hiểm chết người mà tên Dino đã đặt tiền cược cho xe của hắn. Nhưng cùng với những người bạn trung thành và đồng minh Julia hỗ trợ đầy đủ, Tobey đã giành được lợi thế trên mọi bước ngoặt của chặng đua và chứng minh rằng trong một thế giới hào nhoáng của toàn các siêu xe bóng lộn, một chiếc xe độ bình thường vẫn có thể về đích trước.
