Phiên bản hiện đại của bộ phim kinh dị đẫm máu Evil Dead, làm lại từ tác phẩm cùng tên năm 1981 thu được 26 triệu USD trong tuần đầu tiên công chiếu, đứng đầu bảng xếp hạng doanh thu pḥng vé Bắc Mỹ.
Evil Dead (nổi tiếng ở Việt Nam với tên Ma cây) là cuộc chiến đấu của một nhóm bạn trẻ với ma quỷ tại một ngôi nhà trong rừng sâu, khi họ đang cắm trại và phát hiện ra một cuốn sách bí ẩn.
Evil Dead được hăng phim Sony quảng cáo là "bộ phim kinh dị nhất bạn từng xem", được xếp hạng R (Restricted - Không dành cho người dưới 17 tuổi mà không có cha mẹ hoặc người giám hộ đi cùng).
Doanh thu của Evil Dead ngay trong đêm công chiếu đầu tiên (4.4) đă đạt mức 1,8 triệu USD và kết thúc tuần qua với 26 triệu USD, vượt xa dự đoán của các nhà phê b́nh. Giám đốc phát hành toàn cầu của hăng phim Sony, ông Rory Bruer, nói: "Đó là một khởi đầu tuyệt vời. Con số 26 triệu vượt ngoài mong đợi của chúng tôi cho một bộ phim kinh dị giới hạn người xem và có chi phí sản xuất chỉ khoảng 17 triệu USD".
Sam Raimi, người viết kịch bản và đạo diễn phim Evil Dead năm 1981 trở thành nhà sản xuất cho lần tái xuất của bộ phim này. Chính Raimi đă chọn đạo diễn mới Fede Alvarez cho Evil Dead 2013. Đại diện Sony nói rằng "Fede Alvarez chắc chắn đă làm cho Sam Raimi tự hào".
