Bộ phim "Argo" dựa trên một sự kiện có thật, "Argo" ghi chép lại một chiến dịch sinh tử bí mật có nhiệm vụ giải cứu 6 người Mỹ, điều mà đă vén lên bức màn của cuộc khủng hoảng con tin Iran - sự thật đă được che giấu cả thập kỉ. Vào ngày 4/11/1979, vào lúc mà cuộc Cách mạng Iran đang lên đến đỉnh điểm, các dân quân đă tấn công vào đại sứ quán Mĩ ở Tehran, bắt 52 người Mĩ làm con tin. Nhưng giữa cuộc chiến hỗn loạn ấy, 6 người Mĩ đă chạy trốn được và tá túc ở nhà của đại sứ Canada.
Biết được rằng việc 6 người bọn họ bị t́m thấy và giết chỉ là vấn đề thời gian, một chuyên gia tẩu thoát của CIA là Tony Mendez (Affleck) đă lập ra một kế hoạch mạo hiểm để đưa 6 người đó ra khỏi đất nước an toàn. Một kế hoạch không tưởng mà chỉ có thể "xảy ra trong phim".
